Control valves and smart positioners: new reality

Introduction

The concepts of intelligent control valve and smart positioner are introduced. The paper shows that a smart positioner is able to realize the following six functions: monitoring, automatic tuning, diagnostics, configuring, simulation, archiving. Basic malfunctions or errors of a control valve are listed, which can be detected by a smart positioner. A conclusion about the forthcoming complete switch to smart instruments is made.

The paper analyzes the influence of the uncertainty caused by the lack of timely information about distillation column's feed composition on the quality of fractionated hydrocarbon products. With a case study of a naphtha rerun column, it examines the relationship between product qualities in the distillation area and the column's feed composition. A soft sensor is developed for predicting product qualities under feed composition uncertainty.
