Shumsky S.L. An outlook for domestic ERP systems with a case study of AS Spectr development. What is prerequisite to successful enterprise automation?

The paper notes that currently there is no product with overall coverage of all enterprise activities. It lists the drawbacks of domestic and foreign systems and further presents AS Spectr system offered by StartPlus company. The system includes 4 management loops (process and engineering data, supply and sales, planning and scheduling, finance) and can be integrated with accounting systems and Ascon`s CAD/CAM and PDM systems.

The paper shows the availability of programming systems that support the two most prevalent technologies of application software development for distributed computing environments. These are the Client/Server technology with its stable market niche and a relatively new multi-tier application development technology. Features, merits and drawbacks of software development are discussed as well as the principles of applications operation in multi-tier architecture.

A major project of Novosibirsk Cogeneration Plant No 3 automation is completed. The project included the development and application of a full-scale process control system for Turbounit No 14 on the basis of Tornado hard-/software system and was implemented within the framework of the general investment program for Novosibirskenergo modernization and reconstruction by OAO Novosibirskenergo`s Engineering Center, ZAO SibKOTES, Modular Systems Tornado and the Automation and Electrometry Institute of Russian Academy (Siberian Department). Process control system application experience, performance parameters and structure are presented.

Operator interface capabilities of Beckhoff controllers

Beckhoff manufactures the controllers of four classes: BC, BX, CX1000 PC-compatible, and industrial PCs. The paper describes the capabilities of communication interfaces between Beckhoff controllers and operator terminals for ModbusRTU; ModbusTCP and industrial bus connections. It emphasizes that the open interface of Beckhoff controllers ensures direct integration with other vendor terminals.

Kroshkin A.N. Level metering: microwaves or ultrasound?

Endress+Hauser employs 9 physical principles from vibration up to gamma-radiation for level measuring and detecting. The paper examines novel noncontact level meters based on microwave and ultrasonic principles. Owing to the similarity of their operation principles, they are called Time-of-Flight (ToF) instruments. These instruments are based on the concept of measuring signal propagation time to media surface and backward.

Modern technologies of wireless communication by I.Shakhnovich was published by Technosphera in 2004. The book examines modern wireless communication technologies: from pico- and micro-networks (Bluetooth, DECT) up to IEEE 802.11 a/b/g, IEEE 802.16/802.16a standards. A historical overview of cell communication networks is included. Operation principles of equipment in GSM and CDMA (IS-95) standards are described. The development directions of third generation cell networks are outlined.

Wi-Fi roaming technologies from Avaya, Motorola, and Proxim

The paper shows that the market of wireless network (WLAN) devices demonstrated the highest growth in recent years. It suggests that the combination of economic and technical advantages of IP telephony with mobility of Wi-Fi is a natural development of both technologies. The suggestion is illustrated with a common project of Motorola, Avaya, and Proxim.

Aerospace Conference of National Instruments

The Aerospace Conference of National Instruments - a major developer and manufacturer of instrumentation and software for various industries - took place in Moscow on November 22, 2004. NI`s products are especially topical for Russian aerospace industry. The paper overviews equipment novelties and the commissioned systems for bench, airborne and flight tests of engines, test rigs for structural airframe testing, large-scale vibrodiagnosis and acoustic test systems, and avionics testing systems developed by NI and their partners.
