Cosmotronica-Venets hardware is described; featured properties of process control systems based on this toolkit are discerned and justified. Some examples of various process control modules implementation at several major power plants are adduced.

Groza L.P. Process protection and alarm management in industrial control systems

The paper shows that regulatory and technical literature dedicated to process protection and alarm management shows the lack of generic terms definitions that results in their ambiguous interpretation. Such situation is inadmissible especially for hazardous plants. Each technical term should be understood unambiguously and have a sole functional value. Only in such case, the process protection and alarm management algorithm will accomplish its main task: protect the plant and prevent an accident. Corrected and adjusted definitions of key protection and alarm management terms are proposed.

Volotskoy D.M. Metrology automation - a "popular" software solution

The ASMO software suite (Russian abbreviation of Automated Metrology Assurance System) intended for automatizing the labor of metrology functions at Russian enterprises is presented. The paper shows that the new product is a cost-effective solution for the enterprises with diverse instrumentation. System functionality and features are described.

Sergheev S.P., Perevalov V.K., Zakharov N.A., Seleznev S.B. A control system for West Shatlyk booster compressor plant

A control system for West Shatlyk (Turkmenistan) buster compressor plant is described. The system implementation is based on GE Fanuk PLCs. The system`s most topical tasks are the unit`s gas turbine drive control, surge control and protection, operation mode adjustment. Both the gas compressor unit controls and the plant equipment control system are implemented with unified hard- and software.

Mashtakov A.D. comparison of CIMREX 12 and BLUE LEAF 300 operator panels as parts of a weighting terminal based on Beckhoff BC8100 controllers

CJSC Exset in cooperation with Soyuztsvetmetautomatica Scientific and Production company has designed a weighting terminal for transporter weighers and batchers on the basis of Beckhoff BC8100. The need for selecting an operator panel appeared. As applied to the task, the paper compares the performance of CIMREX 12 (Beijer Electronics, Sweden) è BLUE LEAF 300 (Maple Systems, USA) panels.

How technology breakthroughs affect the embedded computers market

Basic development lines of embedded industrial computers are analyzed from design, application, hard- and software viewpoints. The following topics are discussed: terminology adjustment, economic and technical requirements, brand-new components and vendor`s response to them, software development trends, commissioning practices, and new application areas. The following statements are concluded from embedded industrial computers analysis: (i) industrial hardware costs decrease; (ii) leading chip vendors permanently reduce energy intensity, fanless solutions become conventional; (iii) a powerful real-time operating system will be soon developed with a license cost comparable with office operating systems; (iv) most of hardware costs fall at I/O and communications devices; (v) software`s focal point is applications design and coding - the work that can be hardly replicated; (vi) new application areas arose related with real-time digital processing and image analysis; (vii) a typical future system is a powerful and reliable CPU module furnished with the most widespread I/O interfaces and connected with necessary ADC and DAC devices.

In 2006, the computer world and, particularly, the embedded computers are poised to significant changes. Besides the incipient massive transition of the most of embedded computer standards such as PICMG 1.2/1.3, ETX/COM Express, CompactPCIExpress, EPIC, ATCA, VME, mini-ITX, etc., to the PCIExpress platform, we anticipate the appearance of COTS solutions based on new microprocessor generations such as Multi Core, in particular the dual core - a microprocessor with 2 CPUs on a single chip. The embedded computer markets such as communication, defense, process industry, instrument-making, airspace, medicine and games will certainly benefit from the new generation of multi-core microprocessors. Those who are the first to utilize the advantages will benefit most. The paper shows that Intel® ECX (Embedded Compact eXtended) launched in late 2005 is a finished system prototype of an industrial 145?45 mm single-board computer. This is a more powerful computer on a less than half-size board as against MiniITX and EPIC.
