Improving process safety is an important objective of process control implementation. The application of automation tools in process and emergency shutdown and other process safety systems in Russia is governed by a variety of operative rules and guidelines; many of them are obsolete and do not reflect technology advances in the field of industrial safety, nor do they comply with European and world legislation. Against this background, the paper overviews the legislation in the fields of microprocessor protection systems, discusses the ways of improving the existing guidelines and bringing them in compliance with world standards. It also presents modern process safety systems integrated with ABB 800хА System and discusses the variants and advantages of their application.

    Most of industrial IT vendors delegate the choice of color schemes and screen layout attributes to programmers who do not have enough expertise in human psychology and physiology. Even professional designers may not see the difference between the design for advertising and for dispatcher's HMI. This makes such screens look nice in advertising leaflets but results in quick fatiguability of operators and dispatchers. The paper examines the influence of color schemes and screen attributes on fatiguability of dispatchers.
