The paper shows that the key feature of automation systems and tools selection is taking into account their properties that determine their up-to-dateness and operation prospect. The concepts of up-to-dateness and operation prospect are analyzed for the key classes of automation systems and tools: sensors, controllers, industrial networks, SCADA, and DCS.

The role of MES-class systems in industrial enterprise management model is demonstrated. MES are compared with process control and enterprise level systems. The architecture of SKATTM software package is presented. SKATTM is a universal platform for development and execution of enterprise level MES-class applications and for interaction with continuous production cycle.

An intelligent organizational-technical system of claim examination for freight delivery delay by rail transport is presented. The decision-making system structure, its operation and implementation features are discussed. The paper shows that the system implementation at Privolzhskaya Railway was paybacked in 1 year.

The paper justifies the topicality of multi-vendor information systems integration in major national and private companies as well as in inter-departmental structures. It proposes an approach to solving the problem by developing a meta-information storage. The concepts and approaches to the storage implementation and operation are described, as well as the tools and the techniques of all work stages implementation.

The paper shows that the automation of water supply facilities as well as other industrial plants includes preproject preparation, implementation, commissioning, and maintenance phases. It identifies water supply systems typical for most of industrial plants with water treatment facilities and emphasizes that custom systems with maximum accounting of plant specificity and client`s requirements are applied by engineering companies along with conventional solutions. Case studies from IKOS experience are adduced.

The topicality of geographically distributed plant data acquisition and processing is shown for various industries including water consumption accounting systems and municipal economy. The paper describes different variants of dispatching point communication with remote facilities using wire and wireless connections. The automation projects for non-attended boiler-rooms and hydrometric stations located in apartment house basements are discussed as case studies.

Solid content measurement in sewage sludge

The LB455 microwave analyzer developed by Berthold Technologies (Germany) is presented. The device measuries solid content in sewage sludge for flocculating agent dosing in sludge dehydration systems of waste treatment facilities. Measurement principle and circuit employed in the instrument are described.
