Dynamic training simulators for industry

Dozortsev V.M. DIAGNOST: a computer-based teaching system for developing operators’ effective decision-making strategies

Computer-based training is becoming increasingly important in preparing process operators. However, training procedures being used are seldom account for the specificity and potentialities of modern information technologies. Against this background, the paper shows the need of applying special training techniques for elaborating effective process control skills. It presents a computer-based teaching system DIAGNOST that realizes the procedures of active forming and fixing of operator’s skills. The results of the system’s application at several refineries are also included. The paper addresses dynamic training simulator developers, personnel managers and cognitive engineers.

Kneller D.V. Computer-based training of process operators: a mini-encyclopedia of common errors

Building a full-scale dynamic process simulator is a complex task that requires combined efforts of many specialists, such as process and control engineers, mathematicians, software and graphics designers, coders, etc. However, the development and installation of a simulator is only a part of the whole job. Purposeful and efficient application of a training system requires coherent activities of both the vendor and the user. The author offers his understanding of how to apply dynamic process simulators in oil refining and petrochemical industries based on his ten-year development and application experience. The paper addresses the needs of plant managers and professionals in deeper understanding of computer-based personnel training.
