But for performing a specific operation it is rational to use specialized robots based on the universal ones according to specific application requirements. FlexPicker from ABB is an example of such custom robot intended for high-speed sorting of different objects. Spot weld robots widely applied in motor-car construction give another example of specialization.

More standardization, less variety: the simplification was the first one in the list of ABB customer`s wishes concerning compressed air preparation for painting robots. With MS Festo series of configurable air treatment modules, a simple solution was found: the single module for all robot types, supplied as an COTS solution.
