The paper formulates and justifies the major factors of successful process control system application such as the availability of a well-developed and tested hard-/software toolkit meeting the plant`s targets, design and development of all documentation, a strong process engineering company participating in the development of documentation and algorithms and their subsequent tuning at the site. At the client`s side, the site and personnel readiness to process control system application are prerequisite.

The paper discusses the design methodology for pneumatic dosing systems with dose measuring based on indirect parameters. Such systems are intended for liquid products packaging.

Kovalyov S.M., Kovalyov V.M. Modern methodologies of business processes description

Classical DFD and WFD standards include a set of symbols or notation to describe a business process. Many other business process description languages and procedures currently exist worldwide. Despite their differences (determined basically by diagram names and the available object types) they are practically identical and demonstrate slight modifications of the classical schemes. The paper discusses modern languages for business processes description such as IDEF 0 and DFD in Gane & Sarson and Yourdon-De Marco notation, IDEF 3, ORACLE, and BAAN.

The paper presents ATLANT specialized SCADA intended for developing automated control systems of power plants and substations. It describes the system architecture, implementation features, and applications and shows a variant of hard-/software system structure whose software component is the ATLANT SCADA.

Pertsovsky M.I., Yevtikhov M.G. Complementary type virtual instruments, protocol analyzers and `visual defaults`

The paper classifies virtual instruments and discusses their programming concepts. The ideas are exemplified in a VI extending the functionality of C9-8 oscilloscope. TstKop software is discussed that is a utility for supporting the general use channel controller`s driver. The ideas presented are quite simple but they concern the underlying concepts of VI programming and imply future development. The paper addresses the analysts who design measurement automation systems, VI programmers, and everyone else interested in VI problems.

Important application areas such as transportation, chemistry, aircraft instrumentation, and power industry where the highest quality and reliability are to be ensured with a small number of manufactured and purchased modules and systems become nowadays a battlefield of embedded system vendors. The paper discusses a new Ampro Computers, Inc. product line based on the Longhorn uniform hardware platform.

Vorkunov O.V., Takhavutdinov R.G. Sensor`s complementary error reduction in an automated temperature measurement system

The paper analyzes the effect of shape, material, and mounting of an intelligent temperature transmitter with an embedded ADC on the complementary measurement error in the conditions of free convection beside a vertical thermal pane. An automated measuring system is developed that displays sensor temperature and heating element`s power in real time. Numerical solution of fundamental impulse and thermal energy transport equations allows to build temperature and velocity fields for free convective air motion. The investigation undertaken results in the optimal sensor shape that ensures minimum heat flow deformation.

Shevelev Yu.V. Calibration equipment for contact temperature measuring devices

The paper presents the products of ETALON Scientific and Production Company for contact temperature measuring devices calibration. It shows that the whole spectrum of products enables to complete a high-performance calibration laboratory of industrial temperature measurement facilities for the whole contact thermometry range.

Dianov R.S., Protalinsky O.M. A neuron network-based decision-making support system for gas condensate fields

During gas condensate field development it is often necessary to intensify gas discharge. The decision-making process to take place when planning the necessary steps is rather difficult and has no precise mathematical description. In view of this, an informational decision-making support system based on neuron networks was designed. A Kohonen network is used for selecting the intensifying action. The decision efficiency is predicted with the help of a three-layered perceptron on formal neurons with a single hidden layer. Neuron network architectures are developed, learning algorithms are described, and the NN models are validated. The developed decision-making support system enabled significant improvement of specialist labor productivity and the quality of decisions made.

An intelligent decision-making support system (DMSS) for industrial application of natural zeolites is presented. The DMSS design task is formulated and its accomplishment by means of artificial intelligence technique is justified. The structure of a hybrid expert system, subject area knowledge representation models used, and the main algorithm of management decision-making are described.

Application experience of process control systems and microprocessor-based hard-/software systems

The 29th International seminar-presentation and exhibition "Automation. Hard-/Software Tools. Systems. Application" took place in the V.A.Trapeznikov Institute of Control Sciences on April 5-8 2005. One of the areas discussed by the seminar participants was the application of microprocessor-based process control systems and hard-/software complexes. A special session was dedicated to this topic that ended with a round-table discussion. Some fragments of the most interesting speeches are presented here.
