Dozortsev V.M.  An outlook for Russian academic science in industrial automation

Domestic science had been involved in the development of automated control systems always tightly and sometimes effectively, and their history has not yet been written to the full extent. The discussion of the outlook for possible re-integration of academic science and industrial automation is organized by the Journal presumes a brief overview of automated control systems evolution. Based on such historic overview including the analysis of 1970-80s systems' weaknesses and their causes the paper discusses possible scenarios of regaining the misses of Russian science.

Keywords: industrial automated control systems, academic science, control system integrators, automated control systems, Industry 4.0, high tech startups.

Sorkin L.R.  Can academic science become again receptive in industrial automation?

Key reasons of a breach between academia and industry lie in organizational and human unreadiness of research institutes and universities to operate on the market. The challenge can be surmounted if academic environment engenders teams able to render effective science-intensive services to process control vendors, integrators, and industrial users. Next generation leaders are needed to implement the concept.

Keywords: industrial automation, academic science, science-intensive services, product and service oriented business.

Menn A.A.  Industrial revolution 4.0 in Russia: is there any hope?

The ways out of domestic applied science are listed. These include: (1) the development of scientific organizations' potential in the expertizing design concepts, architecture, modeling and tuning tools of advanced automation systems, (2) improving educational level by moving educational process from universities to chairs established at the most advanced system integrators and Russian offices of foreign vendors, (3) creating the conditions for open interaction of Russian industrial enterprises with international branch cloud platforms.

Keywords: expertise, automation systems, applied science, education, branch cloud platforms

Novik Yu.A.  Industry 4.0: moving focus from import replacement to "import forestalling"

The paper discusses the potential of Russian manufacturers of instrumentation, software and automation tools in the field of developing import forestalling technologies of Industry 4.0 class.

Keywords: Industry 4.0, automation tools and systems, developers, consolidation, import forestalling.

Katz B.A.  On higher education secrets

Key problems of Russian higher education are listed, such as total poverty, degradation, and extinction of teachers, decreasing professional level of graduates, excessive administrative staff. The ways out of the crisis are outlined.

Keywords: higher education, autonomy, bureaucrats, underinvestment, graduates.

Yakovis L.M.  Hello, applied science, where are you?

The paper analyzes the factors impeding the propagation of domestic applied science products over industrial automation. It reveals counter-tendency contributing to possible wider role of domestic science-intensive developments in future. Actions capable to speed up the practical use of applied science products are offered.

Keywords: applied science, industrial automation, fundamental science, domestic developments.

Zakharchenko V.E., Sidorov A.A.  The effect of active power distribution function on hydro-power station's efficiency

The paper discusses improvement of hydro-power stations' efficiency by changing active power distribution function of centralized control systems. Various power distribution scenarios are offered and illustrated by examples; comparisons reveal their merits and drawbacks. The results can be generalized for hydro-power stations with a variety of hydroelectric generator types.

Keywords: power distribution function, efficiency, hydro-power station, hydroelectric generator, automatic control system, effective control, potential loss.

Discussing a Topic…

Communication environments for industrial automation

Skvortsov M.S.  TCnet fault-tolerant real-time protocol for industrial networks

The structure of standards describing Ethernet-based industrial network protocols is examined. Communication profile of TCnet protocol is described. Its key implementation features presume the use of deterministic ordered multiple access (DOMA) technique to the medium implemented at the data link layer and the common shared network memory implemented at the application layer. The network's key performance data are included.

Keywords: real-time industrial networks, communication profiles and protocols, deterministic ordered multiple access, common network memory.

Vorobyov S.S.  Link layer protection in industrial Ethernet networks

Data link layer cyber threats to industrial Ethernet networks, such as MAC- and ARP-spoofing, VLAN hopping, STP attack, DHCP starvation are discussed. Possible ways to organize the protection based on Defense in Depth security principle and managed switches are proposed.

Keywords: cyber threats, managed switches, industrial Ethernet network protection mechanism, data link layer threats.

Ivanov I.V.  Communication environments for industrial enterprises

Industrial and building automation markets offer a variety of data communication protocols. Today, OPC UA and MQTT provide the best fit for unified industrial automation and building automation protocols respectively. InSAT products support both.

Keywords: communication environments, building automation, industrial automation, distributed control systems, unified data communication protocol.

Podkhvatilin D.S., Klepikov V.I.  Failures compensation in redundant industrial devices of distributed networked control systems

The organization of redundant actuating devices control in a distributed networked control system is discussed. An approach is offered based on simultaneous parallel control of all channels of a redundant actuating device, where a control signal is generated in each channel by fully independent control loop formed from network system's nodes. To compensate for time delays caused by the presence of sequential data exchange channels in the system a structure is proposed based on simultaneous operation of PID controllers and Smith predictors. For detection of and compensation of failures in the redundant actuating device's transform channel an approach is proposed based on overlapping counterphase sine signals on control signals of various channels. This approach retains full independence of control signals shaping.

Keywords: PID controller, redundancy, actuating devices, control signal, Smith predictor.

Polishchuk S.  Connected factory and Cisco SD-Access

Typical challenges faced currently by corporate IT services are outlined. A state-of-the-art approach to overcome them is offered on the basis of Cisco Software-Defined Access (SD-Access) connected factory. Key components and technologies underlying Cisco SD-Access and their operation principles are discussed. Primary practical tasks that can be addressed with the help of SD-Access are listed.

Keywords: campus network, corporate service, connected factory, overlay, network topology, policy, services.

Zubkov A.F., Churin P.S.  Experimental modeling procedure for atmospheric pollution propagation over apartment blocks

The paper examines the propagation of chimney and heating plant smoke in the vicinity of apartment blocks, in particular, in its non-aerated inner area. The key objective is to investigate the influence of various building parameters such as chimney heights, roof shapes and slopes, etc.) on smoke propagation and develop recommendations on smoke concentration reduction.
