Human factor in industrial automation

Introduction

Malafeev S.I., Malafeeva A.A.  Man and automation: competition or collaboration?

The paper discusses the interaction between human beings and instrumentation at various evolution stages of industrial automation. At the current development phase, the harmonious interactions between human operator and intelligent control devices are coming to the forefront. The improvement and complication of control technology increases the role of human factor in automation rather than diminishing it, and human creativity is getting paramount.

Keywords: automation, system, control, human factor, artificial intelligence, computer.

Venger A.L.  Mathematical modeling of decision-making in time-varying situations

The paper offers a mathematical model describing information gathering and analysis necessary for a human individual to make adequate decisions in decision situation associated with high risk. It is assumed that the implementation of the decision is ensured by an appropriate emotional assessment, which is a sufficient level of confidence in decision’s safety. The model is based on mathematical decision theory and time series techniques. The effect of individual’s life strategy and previous experience is examined.

Keywords: decision theory, time series techniques, life strategy, anxiety.

Dozortsev V.M., Oboznov A.A., Nazin V.A., Gutsikova S.V., Mironova A.S.  Forming operator’s conceptual understanding of process plant: an actual task and an objective result of computerized training

An attempt is made to realize where the changes experienced by process operators during computerized training (with the focus on process operation specificity) are exemplified and how can they be measured. The paper examines the prerequisites and tools for the investigation of operator’s conceptual model (CM). It discusses the existing approaches to training result assessment, preliminary operator training and experimental verification of its effectiveness, operator’s CM content and structure as well as model dynamics’ evaluation criteria. The relationship between training successfulness (expressed in CM terms) and operators’ mental features is considered in personality psychology context. The results of the experimental study of CM dynamics are included.

Keywords: conceptual model, operator, computerized training, preliminary training.

Anokhin A.N., Ivkin A.S., Alontseva E.N.  Ecological interface design for operators of complex processes

Ecological interface (EI) enables significant reduction of operator’s cognitive load in complicated situations. Its design and implementation pose various challenges such as complex analysis of the subject area, insufficient formalization of visual image development, prejudices of experienceв operators, and different EI efficiency in various situations. The paper describes EI development process, which includes specific procedures to overcome the challenges. The process comprises of six phases: subject area analysis, graphic image synthesis, blueprint design, prototype development, testing, trial operation and evaluation, implementation. The features and implementation techniques of each phase are discussed.

Keywords: ecological interface, cognitive graphics, design, estimation, cognitive ergonomics.

Kraevsky D., Ivanova A.I.  Situational perception. A new approach to HMI design

The designers of industrial automation systems search permanently for new ways to improve operation efficiency of their products without detriment to product quality and personnel safety. The paper shows that the improvement of control systems’ HMI is a major key to success. With better control tools the operating personnel can improve both industrial safety and business efficiency.

Keywords: human-machine interface, situational perception, process control systems, target oriented approach, goal-directed design.

Ulyashkin A.V.  Control station design with human factor consideration

Human factor makes a key contribution in the control efficiency of complex technological systems, fail-safety, prevention of technogenic disasters and mitigation of their consequences. Therefore, a deep and comprehensive consideration of human factor is necessary in the design and modernization of control stations of any size. The paper discusses all aspects of such consideration.

Leus A.V., Radostev N.Yu., Simonov I.V.  Application of augmented reality technology and pattern recognition for improving industrial labor efficiency

Decreasing the number of industrial accidents and expensive equipment damage is actual at any times. These challenges are addressed today by novel technologies such as training with immersion into virtual reality, augmented reality, pattern recognition for automating specific production sections. Against this background, the paper discusses the possibility of applying augmented reality in industry to improve labor efficiency.

Keywords: augmented reality, pattern recognition, interactive context.

Shikova Yu.V.  On the way to production safety

The paper argues for investments in employees’ professional development and retraining to overcome the challenges related with human factor in industry.
