High-reliability and high-safety automation systems

Fedorov Yu.N. Safe automation systems development trends.

The merits and drawbacks of IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 standards are analyzed. The status quo in domestic regulations on safe control and protection systems development is overviewed. For the first time, the correspondence between domestic explosive risk categories and foreign integral safety classes and levels is established. The recommendations on protection system architecture dependent on explosive risk category are made. To consolidate enterprise’s safety regulations, it is proposed to establishing Enterprise Standard on process control system design, development, and operation.

Tyurin O.G., Kal’nitsky V.S. Design concepts and implementation of high-reliability automated control systems for hazardous processes.

The principles applied by Plastic Enterprise in control systems development for hazardous processes are formulated. Beside the conventional design and engineering issues of system reliability provision, the paper focuses on the its intelligent component. The examples oa control systems implemented at special chemicals plant during the recent 3 years are adduced.

TECON Group was the Russia first company who as early as in 90s developed and started commercial manufacture of control devices for critical applications. Lower probability of production losses is a key driver of fault-tolerant PLC-based automation systems with improved availability. The automation system is designed to be ready to predefined (programmed) actions in any situation, even in case of one or more components failure. The higher is the production loss level related with unplanned plant outage, the more reasonable is the application of a fault-tolerant automation system. The paper reviews TECON controllers-based fault-tolerant complexes ensuring continuous trouble-free operation of critical processes.

Destination, featured properties, and architecture of PASSAT process automation hard-/software complex intended for high-reliability control systems development are discussed.

Zinoviev V.L., Freudman A.V. SM SICON hard-/software complex for high-reliability automation systems.

SM SICON hard-/software complex for critical applications is intended for the processes where significant controls failure may entail disastrous effects. The complex was developed in the Institute of Control Computers in cooperation with Nautsilus and Computer complexes. The fault-tolerance is ensured by active reservation of key elements configurations, while all software including SCADA is developed on the basis of RTOS.

The paper overviews emergency protections and critical process control systems based on fault-tolerant hardware from Triconex.

Enhanced equipment reliability is a paramount requirement in process automation for potentially dangerous industries. Along with the high quality of modern electronics and microprocessors for industrial automation, a way to improve the reliability is doubling and tripling of critical system components. The paper discusses the solutions from Prosoft-Systems Engineering Company in the field of high-reliability equipment for critical applications. The tripled electronic disengaging clutch and vibration monitoring equipment are presented.

The paper discusses a versatile training system developed by INIUS CJSC and its application in process simulation, in particular in full-scale training simulators development for control engineers.

Design and project implementation phases of a process control system for vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) are discussed. The system was developed and commissioned by Sinetic (Novosibirsk, Russia).

The relationship between the carbon monoxide emission and the manipulated variables of electrochemical marking process is analyzed; the opportunity for automatic control of hazardous substance emissions to working area air is demonstrated.

The operation of a production automation system is a base of its lifecycle. Nevertheless, some vendors wrongly underrate the priority of system maintenance as against its other life phases such as design, development, and commissioning. The practice shows that such situation does not meet actual needs of end users in either reliability and safety issues or in efficient asset management. Bart R. Windows Embedded CE 6.0: a new RTOS in Beckhoff technologies.

Microsoft has launched the 6th RTOS for embedded GP devices. Its name Windows Embedded CE 6.0 emphasizes its difference from the known mobile OS, also by Microsoft. The merits and drawbacks of the new RTOS are considered, as well as the advantages of its application in industrial automation.

A multi-channel process control laboratory bench for efficient process control and training is developed on the basis of Schneider Electric’s TSX Premium PLC. The system enables information input through measuring channels and various nature data processing. An important constituent of the multi-channel bench’s workability is PLC configuring and programming. An effective approach to the problem for TSX Premium PLC is based on PL-7 Pro software and applied software developed in the Moscow State University of Technologies and Management.
