Bazhanov V.L. Smith predictor in closed-loop control systems with digital controllers

The paper continues the discussion of automatic control systems improvement. It proves experimentally that Smith predictor is an effective tool for improving control performance at the plants with dead time as well as high-order plants. Operation and tuning principles of a PID controller working with predictor are presented. The paper shows that digital controllers are adapted well for adding Smith predictor option. It offers experimentally proven variants of predictor software implementation for industrial programmable and PID controllers.

A pulse controller with automatic backlash recognition and compensation is offered for controlling an aperiodic plant. The operation of such controller is compared with the operation of a pulse controller without backlash compensation. Significant advantages of the controller with compensation are demonstrated.

Olson J., Cummings J. ATCA and MicroATCA standards help to create integrated solutions

The paper shows that the appearance of ATCA and MicroATCA standards contributes to the development of simpler solutions for power supply interface. TPS2359 controller with 2 slots is presented which controls AdvancedMC hot switching functions, meets ATCA and MicroATCA requirements, and enables assemblage space reduction due to decreased components number and size. TPS2359 also takes the advantages of I2C interface.

The paper shows that the application of multivariable predictive control enables the increase of production, yield and quality in many areas of Bayer process, especially at bauxite digestion area, while its application at evaporation and heat exchange sections gives additional benefits. The technology is also suitable in grinding, precipitation, and calcination. Altogether, improvements of production or yield of up to 0.5…4.0% are reliable.
