Even less could predict this "beast" to become available for everyone, and industrial development would in many respects depend on the maturity of Internet technologies. Today Internet and IT cover all aspects of human life, but the global communication infrastructure is vulnerable to various attacks. The threat of cyber attacks at any level, especially at process control level is giving increasing concern both in industrial community and among various governmental organizations. It is well understood now that the consequences of cyber attacks may become especially destructive for process controls. The paper's objective is to attract the readers' attention to information security in process control.

Aristova N.I.  Ethernet in industrial automation: removing obstacles

Ethernet evolution history and data packet assembly in the OSI model are discussed. The limitations impeding Ethernet application in industrial automation tasks are formulated. The paper notes that Ethernet operation in real time requires additional mechanisms, which allow to avoid a collision. Such mechanisms in Ethernet-compatible real-time protocols EtherNet/IR PROFINET, EtherCAT, Powerlink, Modbus TCP, Foundation Fieldbus HSE, and SERCOS III are examined. IEEE1588 standard enabling high-precision synchronization of network users' clocks is considered. Characteristics and application fields of wireless Ethernet networks are listed. Ethernet redundancy mechanisms STP, MSTP, MRP, Link Aggregation, PRP, HSR are overviewed. Innovative solutions such as powering through Ethernet and embedded Ethernet switches are described.
