Automation systems for process industries

Faruntsev S.D., Gebel E.S.  Advanced control system for three-phase separator of an oil treatment unit

Based on the analysis of disturbances and manipulated variables of an oil treatment unit, an advanced control system for a three-phase separator is developed. The system employs inferential calculations of fuel gas calorific value and oil emulsion heat content as well as the heat flows ratio. Matlab tools were used to compare the advanced scheme against the traditional PID controls. The simulation included the most prevalent separator operation scenarios such as throughput changes and other typical disturbances.

Keywords: oil emulsion, ration controller, cascade control, soft sensor.

Veryovkin A.P., Denisov S.V., Murtazin T.M., Ustyzhanin K.Yu.  Data preprocessing for soft sensors development in advanced process control

Advanced Process Control (APC) systems typically employ process models enabling fast prediction of changes in product qualities and other KPIs. Inferential modeling techniques are quite developed, but for parametric identification, process history is typically used, which represents the results of passive experiments. The process data are stored in databases as time sequences not ensuring reliability and homogeneity. Data heterogeneity may reduce model quality drastically; therefore, such data cannot be used for modeling without preprocessing and clustering aimed at future development of situational models.
The article discusses the methods and software for DCS data conversion to public format suitable for filtering and clustering software. It describes filtering and clustering methods based on the use of so-called check models and pair correlation coefficients of process variables. Proprietary filtering and clustering software tools are outlined. A case study of a complex distillation column is included.

Keywords: advanced control systems, homogeneous data, modeling, clustering, data analysis.

Osipenko U.Yu., Rusinov L.A.  Catalyst state diagnosis using a fuzzy model

The paper outlines the features of n-alkanes to olefins conversion and describes the development phases of a catalyst deactivation model based on fuzzy logic. Fuzzy clustering is used in the diagnosis model for developing membership functions in conditional parts of fuzzy rules.

MTL backplanes for DCS integration

Backplanes demonstrate a number of advantages as against cabling. Backplanes types from Eaton Electric (the former MTL Instruments) for DCS integration comprise special, standard, and universal series. A key advantage of backplanes is that they are not subject to mandatory certification, because hazardous area circuits are connected to I/O modules of the hazardous area rather than to the backplane.
