Keywords: I/O system, switching, control panels, PLCs, mounting, actuators.

Discussing a Subject…
Embedded computer system market

Derevyago E.V. Embedded systems of the 2nd decade

The current status of processors market is overviewed, their key performance attributes, capabilities, and application fields are outlined.
Keywords: processor, calculator, computer-on-module, embedded systems.

Shatalov A.G. Embedded systems: the next generation

Application of high-speed data buses in embedded systems pushes the industry to format development and, as the result, to new approaches to the development of solutions for user`s applications accelerating and simplifying product marketing. The paper presents the new approach named "embedded subsystems" which combines the best of PC/104 architectures and computers-on-module (COM).
Keywords: mezzanine systems, computers-on-module, embedded subsystems, high-speed data buses.

Yakovlev V.A., Pyatnitskikh A.V. CompactPCI evolution

The paper briefly overviews the development trends of system buses in highway modular systems based on CompactPCI specifications. It presents PICMG 2.30 CompactPCI PlusIO standard enabling the switch from classical PICMG 2.0 parallel bus to systems using only high-speed serial interfaces. CompactPCI Serial standard is described which is now being voted in PICMG consortium. This new standard presumes the complete denial of parallel interfaces with further application of only serial ones.
Keywords: system bus, standard, parallel and serial interfaces.

Panfilov P.B., Ponomarev D.V. Multicore processors in industrial automation. Part I. Multicore-ness and virtualization

Physical and economical laws make processor designers and manufacturers search for new ways of their capacity improvement. A way potentially most attractive for industrial applications is the implementation of multicore-ness concept, i.e. the design of microchips combining 2 or more relatively independent computational nodes. It is anticipated that control systems based on multicore processors will feature higher computing power and reliability coupled with lower total cost as against similar single-core solutions. Against this background, the paper briefly analyzes the causes of multicore processors appearance, investigates computer`s performance in industrial automation applications and the features mandatory for multicore systems aimed at such applications. The advantages of multicore systems for industrial automation applications are examined in detail.
